markets: the growth of LNG exports and the rise of industrial
digitalisation. DSLNG is another expression of the globalisation
and integration of LNGmarkets; it embodies technical innovation,
using digital insight and oversight to drive performance.
There can be no escaping the fact that the future of LNG
terminals is inextricably bound up with the ‘fourth industrial
revolution’, and the waves of mass digitalisation occurring as a
result.
A competitive advantage
DSLNG has acknowledged this fact and stands to gain a
competitive advantage through the adoption of this cutting edge
technology. GE has estimated, for example, that the digital
industrial solutions it has already deployed across a number of
industries are yielding an average 20% performance improvement
for operators.
Realising the potential of a
digitalised oil and gas industry will not
only help companies ride out this
turbulent cycle, but will also enable
higher productivity and efficiency in the
long term – a potential key asset in the
sector’s rebalancing.
This is because digital solutions that
monitor and analyse performance data
can discern pressing issues that require
immediate attention, allowing operators
to prevent expensive shutdowns and
improve overall reliability in a way that
was not possible before. The confluence
of advanced computing, increasingly
sophisticated analytics and
unprecedented levels of connectivity
has redefined the operational
environment. An exponential increase in
data, which can now be captured,
evaluated and acted upon, has provided
industries around the world with
enormous quantities of valuable digital
information.
The digital/physical
nexus
Access to low cost sensors has largely
fuelled development, resulting in
sizeable efficiencies, which translate into
genuine financial gains. Of course, these
innovations must be coupled with tried
and tested formulas and implemented
with expert oversight, which is why an
extended GE high level skilled resident
teamwill also be permanently based at
the terminal to guarantee constant
coverage and outstanding performance
results.
The commercial and technical
offering to DSLNG was conceived and
developed through highly specialised
site assessments prior to the plant
construction phase, ensuring that the
plant layout best fits the tailored
maintenance philosophy GE is offering in order to maximise
production. Contract execution will be carried out alongside
strong local partnership building, including a localisation plan to
be further refined during the full life of the contract.
Dawn of the digital era
The CSA with PT Donggi signifies the dawn of a new digital era for
the oil and gas industry. It illustrates the many opportunities and
possibilities that arise out of the industrial internet, which were
articulated time and again at the World Economic Forum.
World leaders may have philosophised about a digital
industrial future, however, operations such as this one illustrate
that the future is already here. This example demonstrates how
the digital phenomenon should be harnessed by the oil and gas
industry in order to provide a stronger, sounder and more
sustainable footing for the foreseeable future.
