The Port of Antwerp is one of the major gateways to
Europe. With a world class petrochemical cluster, an
extensive and diverse offering of logistics services, and a
wide range of maritime and intermodal connections, the
site is one of the 20 largest ports in the world. To maintain,
and even strengthen, this position, the port strongly
believes that continuous investment is the key to facing
the coming decades.
Continued growth
The Port of Antwerp handled more than 200 million t in
2015. This is a new record for the port, and marks the first
time ever that it has passed the 200 million t mark.
Continued growth in container volume (up 8.0% in 20 ft
equivalent units, or TEU) and in the amount of liquid bulk
(up 7.9%) show that the Port of Antwerp is ready to meet
the challenges of the future.
The amount of cargo loaded and unloaded has more than
doubled over the past 20 years, making it the largest port in
Belgium and the second largest in Europe. This is further proof
that the economic situation is headed in the right direction,
and that targeted investment in the port sector is bearing
fruit. Furthermore, the Port of Antwerp marks 2016 as the year
in which a number of projects will reach cruising speed.
The volume of liquid bulk rose during the first three
quarters of 2015, by 7.9%, to 49.791 million t. Oil derivatives
for their part performed well, up 4.6% to 35.346 million t.
However, the strongest growth in this segment was shown
by chemicals, which were up 23.7% to 10.669 t.
Accessibility and connectivity
